The Price of Urbanisation

In the vicinity near the University of Abuja permanent site lies the Sabo Iddo community, a place that has become a refuge for students, petty traders, and predominantly low-income earners who lack the means to reside in the more developed areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Recently, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in Abuja took action by demolishing houses in Sabo Iddo, deeming them "illegal" structures. Mr. Ikharo Attah, the Chairman of the FCTA Ministerial Taskforce on City Sanitation, explained that the exercise aimed to promote orderliness in accordance with the Abuja master plan, ultimately creating a modern and civilized vicinity. Unfortunately, this endeavor has come at the cost of the residents, as their homes were razed without any compensation from the government.

This project endeavors to shed light on the plight of the victims directly impacted by urbanization. Many of these individuals have paid a heavy price, finding themselves homeless and devoid of hope, as they desperately seek assistance in securing new shelter. The project aims to highlight the challenges faced by these vulnerable communities and raise awareness about the consequences of rapid urbanization on the most marginalized members of society.
